Today, we honor the sacrifices made by Sadashivrao Bhau and over hundred thousand other Marathas, on the plains of #Panipat, 257 years ago on this day (Jan 14, 1761).
They died while defending India against a foreign invasion.

While the Marathas did lose the battle, their key objective of pushing back the invaders was successful. A weakened Abdalli, fearing a prospect of another battle with the advancing army of Nanasaheb Peshwa, went back to Afghanistan, never to return again to India.

The Maratha Empire suffered a big shock - following the loss at the 3rd Battle of Panipat, and the death of Nanasaheb Peshwa 6 months later. However they were able to recover a majority of the lost ground in less than a decade.

This remarkable recovery was achieved thanks to the great leadership of a young Madhavrao Peshwa (who was only 16 years old when he took over, after his father's death) - ably supported by Nana Phadnavis, Mahadji Shinde and other leaders.

Dr. Uday Kulkarni ( @MulaMutha) has written an excellent, very well researched book on #Panipat1761 (the build-up, the battle and the aftermath).
I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in not just #MarathaHistory, but #IndianHistory https://www.amazon.in/Solstice-at-Panipat-Uday-Kulkarni/dp/8192108007

. @MulaMutha has also written another excellent book on #Bajirao (first half of 18th century).
It was Bajirao, who expanded the 'Swarajya' established by Chhatrapati Shivaji, into a 'Samrajya' - laying the foundation of the Maratha Empire. https://swarajyamag.com/books/solid-research-and-treasure-of-original-references-in-uday-kulkarnis-the-era-of-baji-rao

. @MulaMutha is also working on his next book (2018):
"The Mastery of Hindustan: A Narrative of Maratha Paramountcy in Eighteenth Century India" - the period when the Maratha Empire became a vast confederacy and dominated the Indian subcontinent.
