I have A LOT to say about Prom Night. I've written and discussed this film extensively. It's one of my favorites, and whether intentional or not, it's a ridiculously layered genre film that has so much to say about loss, grief and the betrayal of friends. #SlasherSisters
The way it uses mirrors, and the fracturing of those mirrors is pretty amazing. Prom Night is about brokenness. #SlasherSisters
Everything in Prom Night is broken: Broken families, broken homes, and other broken relationships drive the film to its tragic end. It doesn't spend a lot of time on Robin's death the way a drama would, but it's all about that loss and how it ultimately effects everyone.
What's so shocking about what's happened, is that the children responsible for Robin's death not only keep the secret but also engage in either friendships with her sister Kim, or they actually date her! #SlasherSisters
Except for Wendy (and we'll get to her), it's like her friends have no real concept of what they've done. It's all about the Prom, getting laid, etc. Nick does have a couple of moments of obvious guilt, but honestly, can we say sociopaths? #SlasherSisters
One of the most interesting aspects of this friendship built on lies is that it makes the normally marginalized characters more sympathetic. We feel worse for Lou the Bully & Slick the Drug Dealer when they die because they are not complicit in the original crime. #SlasherSisters
Furthermore, it signifies that the "bad guy" isn't as easy to distinguish anymore. These kids are white, middle class teens who look any one of us. So, they may not be evil, but they are duplicitous & selfish, and don't seem bothered by the original death at all! #SlasherSisters
That is, except for Wendy. Depicted as the "bad girl" in the film, I always saw her tension with Kim as a way for Wendy for remain separate from her (and the others), because she actually feels guilt over Robin's death. #SlasherSisters
In short, Prom Night flips everything on its ear because we can't figure out who is the bad guy and who is the good guy. And maybe I just adore Wendy and the frickin' gorgeous red dress! #SlasherSister
It also enhances the killer's motives because we totally understand why he does what he does. It was Alex's twin sister that was killed, then forgotten about, while he watched the culprits move into his family's circle. #SlasherSisters
Alex's last words are "They did it. They killed her," and you get the idea that Kim understands exactly who Alex is referring to. It's here that film becomes a metaphor for loss of innocence, and how understanding that loss emphasizes the cruelty of adulthood. #SlasherSisters
This is why I can't quit Prom Night... It actually MEANS something. It takes the depiction of friendship and uses it to dissect real emotions and anxieties! This film has a lot of depth if you're willing to take that dive. #SlasherSisters
Thanks to everyone for taking a minute to read and like these posts. Again, I noticed a couple of typos, so double thanks for your patience. I feel good about these posts. Like, disco-cam good! ;) #SlasherSisters
