Right then let’s see if this works on Twitter...

An Instagram post/thread about lifting with a flexed spine (part 1) 1/8
The advice from most healthcare professionals, not to mention manual handling training is ‘don’t lift with your back bent’ 2/8
Most of this advice comes from cadaver or biomechanical modelling studies such as https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10515011/  3/8
However using this data to extrapolate what happens in vitro in individuals is fraught with issues 4/8
Also there are studies that challenge the notion that more flexion creates more shear force in the spine... this for one https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16319750/  5/8
And this from Kingma, despite the abstract shows that lifting with stooped postures is no worse than squat or weightlifter postures... https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20865606/  6/8
In fact when it comes to shear forces stooped postures had less at L5/S1 levels than weightlifting postures... 7/8
So in conclusion we have no robust evidence that lifting with flexion is more risky than neutral
